un arbre (after Saussure)
(2025, 2 x 16mm loops, motion sensors, sycamore cross section)
A 2-channel installation of laser-cut loops that takes as its part of departure Ferdinand de Saussure’s Course in General Linguistics—the tree that served as the foundation for his theory of signification. The two loops project the word (un arbre) and icon (an outline of a tree) on a cross section of a 200-year old sycamore tree that was cut down to make way for a giant apartment building in my neighborhood, playing with the tension between representation and the real.
